Your Phone Is Stealing Your Sleep—One Hour Costs You 24 Minutes

How much does your screen time really affect your sleep cycle?


It turns out that using your phone an hour before bed cuts your sleep time by about 24 minutes, and raises the risk of insomnia by 59%. Frontiers of Psychiatry shares that about 45,000 young adults were tested between the ages of 18-28 years old at a Norweigian university, to fill the lack of research gap on young adults.


Unfortunately, most Americans aren’t getting enough rest. The Casper-Gallup State of Sleep in America report found that 33% of U.S. adults rate their sleep quality as “poor."


The study found that while blue light often gets the blame for poor sleep, the outcomes also points to other culprits—including TV, movies, reading, and social media—as significant contributors to sleep disruption. However, social media was found to be less of a disruptor than other activities.


Why does this matter? According to Healthline, sleep deprivation can negatively affect nearly every major system in your body, including the nervous, immune, respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, and endocrine systems. Over time, chronic sleep loss may lead to serious conditions like diabetes and hypertension.


Whether due to work or hectic schedules, it's crucial to prioritize rest and recovery, as well as avoid blue light before bedtime, to protect your long-term health.
