More than 600 food items sold at an Oxford Street candy shop in Westminster City in London, many from U.S. brands, were seized and burned down after authorities found the goods had banned or illegal ingredients and were deemed unsafe.
The unnamed store in central London carried goods like American cereals and carbonated drinks that contained banned ingredients as well as excessive additives, BBC reported.
Other items seized by the Westminster City Council’s Environmental Health team included chocolates that didn't have English labels which prevented customers from checking ingredients or allergen information.
The move was part of an ongoing Trading Standards raid in the city.
The store has been the target of raids over a period of several months wherein over 2,000 unregulated products have been confiscated and destroyed. Some U.S. sweets sold at the store were identified to have "carcinogenic" ingredients.
"We are continuing to make the lives of unscrupulous traders a nightmare through regular enforcement action," said Adam Hug, head of the Westminster City Council, as quoted by BBC.
U.S. branded cereals have been under scrutiny as health groups raise concerns about alleged toxic ingredients and artificial dyes in their products.
Movements like #CancelKelloggs have called on consumers to boycott the brand's products until they end the use of what they call potentially harmful food coloring. Such ingredients are reportedly banned in other countries, including the U.K.
