President Donald Trump made a child cancer survivor's dream come true by making him possibly the youngest Secret Service agent in the U.S.
During Trump's address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday, the president acknowledged the presence of 13-year-old Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel in the chamber. The young cancer survivor, who was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, has always dreamed of becoming a police officer.
"In 2018 DJ was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors gave him five months at most to live. That was more than six years ago," shared Trump, receiving applause from lawmakers.
Since then, his dad, Theodis Daniel, had been on a quest to make his dream come true. DJ has been sworn in as an honorary officer across the country, but Trump promised to bestow him the "biggest honor of them all" that night.
"I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service," the president announced. The teen, wearing a police uniform, was visibly overwhelmed by the moment.
Upon receiving his badge, DJ gave Curran a big hug.
About seven years ago, DJ was diagnosed with brain cancer. He has since had 13 brain surgeries.
"That's how many times my personality has changed. And that's something you don't hear from a terminally ill child," DJ shared in a clip posted by the White House.
"[I will] keep on going until my gas tank has run out."
The heartwarming moment was met with cheers and applause from both sides of the aisle, with Rep. Laura Gillen, D-N.Y., giving DJ a standing ovation.
Trump proceeded to discuss childhood cancer rates in the country and called upon Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to "keep our children healthy and strong."
