President Donald Trump's multi-billion artificial intelligence infrastructure project could lead to the development of a cancer vaccine.
Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison announced on Tuesday that the newly launched artificial intelligence (AI) initiative, Project Stargate, is driving the development of personalized cancer vaccines. This $500 billion joint venture, revealed by former President Donald Trump this week, brings together industry leaders Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank to establish data centers across the United States aimed at enhancing AI capabilities.
Ellison highlighted the project’s transformative role in early cancer detection, emphasizing the use of AI to analyze simple blood tests for identifying life-threatening cancers.
"One of the most exciting things we're working on--again using the tools that Sam and Masa are providing--is our cancer vaccine," Ellison said during a news conference with Trump at the White House, Fox News reported.
The Oracle chief technology officer explained that AI can be used to review blood tests to find cancer biomarkers. After gene-sequencing a tumor, a customized mRNA vaccine can be designed to match the individual’s specific cancer profile in just 48 hours.
"Imagine early cancer detection, the development of a cancer vaccine for your particular cancer aimed at you, and have that vaccine available in 48 hours. This is the promise of AI and the promise of the future."
President Trump lauded Project Stargate as “the largest AI infrastructure project, by far, in history,” highlighting its potential to revolutionize healthcare and solidify the United States’ leadership in AI innovation.
However, some Trump supporters have expressed skepticism about the mRNA cancer vaccine project, citing lingering distrust of mRNA technology, Newsweek reported.
An mRNA vaccine uses messenger RNA to instruct cells to produce a protein found on the surface of a pathogen, such as the spike protein of a virus. This triggers an immune response, teaching the body to recognize and fight the real pathogen if encountered.
Some distrust mRNA vaccines over fears they alter DNA and concerns over rapid development and irreversible side effects.
Unlike traditional vaccines, which use weakened or inactivated viruses, mRNA vaccines are faster to produce and can be tailored for various diseases, including cancer and COVID-19.
