Study Reveals Children's Mattresses Contain Toxic Chemicals Like Flame Retardants

A recent study shows that children's mattresses contain toxic chemicals like "flame retardants" that can disrupt hormones.

The University of Toronto “measured chemicals in the air of 25 children’s bedrooms between the ages of 6 months and 4 years and found worrisome levels of more than two dozen phthalates, flame retardants and UV filters,” according Miriam Diamond on CNN, a professor at the University.

NRDC.org says that phthalates are "are used for many purposes: to retain the scents used in fragrances, to soften and strengthen plastic, and to help topical products like lotions and cosmetics stick to and penetrate skin."

These can also show up in toy products hurting children's brain, endocrine systems, and development long term EWG shares. However, there are some restrictions today on these chemicals on toy products, but not mattresses.

“We were really shocked to find what was in the mattresses,” Diamond said. “The kids are getting quite a dose of this stuff," Diamond continues.

Even a child's bodyweight can increase the level of toxins released into the air from a generic store bought mattress, most of which are from Mexico, Canada, and the United States. The study did not mention any brand names to identify the mattresses.

There may be some methods to rid of some of the chemicals, including allowing the mattress to air out after purchase, or getting a mattress made of wool which can be more expensive. However, this doesn't totally eradicate the threat and toxins.

To solve such an issue, Diamond mentions that mattress companies must take accountability and "need to be more vigilant."
