Shannon Sharpe is revealing more details about his prostate cancer diagnosis.
In a recent episode of his "Nightcap" podcast, the NFL Hall of Famer discussed his battle with prostate cancer after receiving a diagnosis in 2016. Sharpe revealed that a routine screening led to the discovery.
"[Dr. Bandukwala], he's like since you're moving [to L.A.], won't you just come in and get this, you know, get your routine colonoscopy? And I knew something was wrong because normally when I do this he would call me, this time he didn't call me--there was a lady who called," Sharpe shared with co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson.
Sharpe shared that he got tested in July and his results came back in August.
"They talked about removing the prostate--that's gonna mess with your meat. [Shaking his head] Y'all ain't moving nothing. Whatever God gave me, I'm gonna keep it," he added.
Sharpe underwent treatment for two years, wherein bloodwork was done. He proudly shared that he has been in remission since.
Sharpe first spoke about his 2016 cancer diagnosis in 2022. Speaking with People, Sharpe described his initial shock and the importance of taking swift action to address the illness.
In the interview, he shared his gratitude for being cancer-free, crediting his recovery to regular screenings and timely medical intervention. He also used the platform to raise awareness about the critical need for men, particularly those over 40, to prioritize their health and undergo routine check-ups.
"What I want to do now is break down the stigma – do not be afraid to go to the doctor," Sharpe told the outlet. "Do not be afraid to just ask questions of your doctor. Do not be afraid to get screened because it could save your life."
Shannon Sharpe is a three-time Super Bowl champion and Hall of Fame tight end, who played in the NFL for 14 seasons. Post-retirement, he transitioned to sports media, co-hosting Fox Sports’ "Undisputed" and launching the popular podcast "Club Shay Shay." In 2023, he joined ESPN’s "First Take."
