Vice President J.D. Vance has expressed confidence that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will successfully navigate the Senate confirmation process and be appointed as Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS).
In a recent interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday, the new vice president said he believes Kennedy Jr., along with other nominees Tulsi Gabbard for DNI director and Kash Patel for FBI director, will "get across the finish line" but Republican senators will have to "fight for each one.
Vance praised the Senate Republicans for being "free thinkers" but pointed out that they shouldn't go against President Donald Trump's cabinet nominees.
"The president has made his selections and the advice and consent power of the United States Senate should not be used to block people because you have one policy disagreement on one issue," the former Ohio senator argued.
"You don't get to make these decisions. President Trump gets to make these decisions, and he already has."
RFK Jr.’s nomination for HHS secretary has been met with opposition from political figures and media outlets for his stance on vaccines and his skepticism toward mainstream medical practices which critics find controversial.
His cousin, Caroline Kennedy, has publicly criticized the nomination, describing RFK Jr. as a “predator” and questioning his qualifications for the role.
Despite the controversies, RFK Jr. has gathered a strong following and a significant support base, with crowds packing the Senate halls during the confirmation hearings to show their support for his appointment.
RFK Jr.'s Senate confirmation hearings concluded on Thursday. The next step involves the Senate committee voting on whether to advance his nomination to the full Senate. If the committee approves, the full Senate will then debate and vote on his confirmation.
The timeline for these votes can vary, but they are expected to occur in the coming weeks.
