Psychedelic drugs' effects aren't always negative. While most of these drugs remain federally illegal, recent research has found some to offer benefits to certain groups, including people on the autism spectrum.
A recent study published in the journal "Psychopharmacology" found that over four in every five people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) found reductions in mental health problems after taking a psychedelic.
In this study, 233 self-selecting autistic participants with high autism quotient scores completed an online questionnaire about their most impactful psychedelic experience. The survey tried to assess the changes in mental variables induced by the drug, including distress, social engagement, and psychological flexibility.
The results showed mostly positive psychedelic drug effects--82% said they had reduced psychological distress and 78% observed less social anxiety, while 70% had increases in social engagement.
Only 20% reported negative side effects like increased anxiety, feelings of grief, isolation, and paranoia.
"This is the first survey with autistic adults that suggests they may benefit significantly from psychedelic experiences," Jack Stroud, a clinical psychologist and study lead author, told Science.
"It indicates that future proof-of-concept trials would be worthwhile."
The team is now working on a follow-up study focusing on MDMA. They hope that the studies can help pave the way for more research to support people on the autism spectrum.
According to data from Autism Speaks, 1 in 36 children in the U.S. have autism; 1 in 45 adults are also identified with ASD.
