King Charles Hospitalized Over Cancer Treatment Side Effects, Cancels Public Engagements

King Charles III was hospitalized on Thursday due to side effects from his ongoing cancer treatment, the Buckingham Palace confirmed.

The monarch, 76, was admitted to The London Clinic in Marylebone, for a short period this week but has returned to Clarence House and is said to be continuing state duties, including reviewing official papers and making calls, BBC reported.

The unexpected pause came just before a scheduled visit to Birmingham, which included four public engagements. Following his doctors' medical advice, the Palace has canceled the plans—a move the King reportedly found “greatly disappointing.”

“He very much hopes that they can be rescheduled in due course and offers his deepest apologies to all those who had worked so hard to make the planned visit possible,” a Palace spokesperson said, per BBC.

The Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles' cancer diagnosis in February 2024. It did not reveal further details about the side effects the king experienced.

Despite the recent setback, King Charles has remained active during his treatment. In recent weeks, he traveled to Northern Ireland, attended the Commonwealth Day service, and even curated a playlist to spotlight British music.

A Palace source described the hospital visit as a “most minor bump in a road that is very much heading in the right direction,” The Guardian reported. The King also did not arrive by ambulance, signaling that the hospital visit was precautionary, not an emergency.

Since his diagnosis, the Palace has not revealed the specific type of cancer. However, Charles resumed public duties in April 2024 following a break for his treatment. He has since kept a full schedule and appears determined to continue leading from the front.

Next month’s state visit to Italy is still scheduled to go ahead, though a meeting with Pope Francis was postponed due to the pontiff’s health, not the King’s, ITV News confirmed.

Though King Charles' treatment is ongoing, he is expected to resume his full schedule as early as next week.
