As the cast of HBO's Euphoria heads back to set for season three April 14th, 2025, actor Eric Dane shares with a People magazine exclusive interview that he has been diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
According to the ALS Association, this disease "is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord...When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. When voluntary muscle action is progressively affected, people may lose the ability to speak, eat, move and breathe".
Some early symptoms mentioned by the ALS Association include "muscle twitches and stiffness, loss of control of the hands and arms, weakness, fatigue, tripping, dropping objects, and slurred speech", to difficulty with speech and breathing.
The most difficult part about a Lou Gehrig's disease, another common name, is that the cause of ALS is unknown says the New York Presbyterian. About 10% of cases will see a family history of the disease, also known as familial ALS.
During the conversation with People, he shares that “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter...I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week... I kindly ask that you give my family and I privacy during this time."
Dane is not only known for his role as Cal in Euphoria, but also Dr. Mark "Mcsteamy" in Grey's Anatomy.
