FDA Upgrades Walmart Broccoli Recall To Highest Risk; Warns Bacteria May Cause 'Death'

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has elevated the Walmart broccoli recall to its highest risk classification due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The recall affects Organic Marketside Broccoli Florets, distributed by Braga Fresh Foods, which issued a voluntary recall in December 2024 after routine testing detected the bacteria. While no illnesses have been reported, the FDA has classified this as a Class I recall, indicating a serious health risk that could lead to severe illness or death.

"The use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," the FDA warned.

According to The Hill, the recalled products were sold in 12-ounce packages at Walmart stores in 20 states, including California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and Washington. It had a lot code of BFFG327A6 and a best-if-used-by date of December 10, 2024.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that causes listeriosis, a serious infection affecting pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea, with severe cases leading to meningitis, septicemia, or pregnancy complications. It’s often linked to contaminated produce, dairy, and processed meats.
